We are going home to Schuylkill County, PA.

A Shimsky Family Reunion is being planned for the weekend of July 27-30, 2018, in the Minersville, PA area. We will be going home to where Peter and Mary Maliniak Shimsky settled their family, starting our families American Dream.
The weekend will include the 84th Annual Ukrainian Seminary Day at the Saint Nicholas Picnic Grove, Rt 901, Primrose(Minersville), PA from 11 am to 8 pm, on Sunday, July 29th, 2018.
There are still many details to work out. Nancy Gulbrandsen and Susan Ledford (SusanLedford13@gmail.com) will be the go to people with any questions, suggestions and ideas. There are so many of our Shimsky family that barely, or don't, know one another. Lets fix that and get as many family members as we can to this reunion. Let's get to know each other and have a ball in our family homeland.
This BLOG will be the main information resource, but Facebook Messaging may also be used. Please share this BLOG with as many family as you know. We need e-mail addresses and/or snail mail addresses and then a head count for all those that will be going. Yes, we have just under 10 months to plan, and the biggest challenge will be to find places to stay, so let's get this party started.

Some Things To Do While In Schuylkill County

  • Our reunion plans include the 84th Annual Ukrainian Day on Sunday, July 29th, 2018, but depending upon when you get to Schuylkill County, there are many other things to fill your time. The first stop would be online to the Schuylkill County Visitors Bureau. This site will help you plan your free time, or maybe help you consider a longer stay.
  • Since we are descended from coal miners, one of my favorite attractions is the Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine & Steam Train. The Blumenbergs went there in in the 1970's. We got a feel for the coal mining experience in a anthracite coal mine that was closed in 1931. We got an explanation of deep-mining methods. You can also take a ride on the Henry Clay, a narrow gauge steam train that used to haul coal cars. It now gives people a short ride along the side of the Mahanoy Mountain.
  • Then there is the oldest brewery in America, right in Pottsville. The Yuengling Brewery  would be a great place for some adult libation and a brewery tour.
  • Then there is the Schuylkill County Historical Society. which has a Museum, Artifacts, Programs and Historical/Genealogical Research.
